The new Bentley GT is a descendant of the original R-Type Continental produced in the 1950s.
Its lines and general design can be traced back easily, and while it is very much a car of the 21st century, it is
all the better for its illustrious Grand Touring past.
This is a two-door coupe. It first saw the light of day in 2003 when it replaced the Continental R and
Continental T models.
This is the kind of car movie characters like James Bond might be seen driving.
The Bentley GT W12 twin turbocharged 6.0 litre engine has all the raw power that any suave spy character could ever
want.
It's British through and through, and with a top speed of just a couple of miles per hour under 200 mph, it's fast,
sleek, stylish and very desirable.
The new Bentley GT has luxury oozing from its very pores.
It is guaranteed to turn heads, and after all, isn't that what you want when you choose a name like Bentley?
The new Bentley GT on the outside ...
After going through a decidedly lacklustre period where innovation in Bentley designs more or less stalled, the
company virtually reinvented itself after 2003, starting with the Bentley Continental GT coupe.
The overall design is basically a return to Bentley roots, but with a definite 21st century look and feel added
too.
The car has an almost smiling look to it when viewed head on.
This effect comes from the running lights being slightly higher and set close to the headlamps.
The lights are of course modern LEDs, but they retain the basic look and feel of earlier tungsten lights - until
they are switched on, of course.
The only thing that seems slightly out of place is the high set wing mirrors.
This is a design that runs through all the modern Bentley cars, but at first sight the mirrors seem to be sitting
too high on stalks. However, you soon get used to this design element, and before long it makes perfect sense.
The grille of the new GT is a simple design.
The grille is split in two halves and has a crisscross dark matrix radiator mesh body, topped by the distinctive
flying "B" Bentley emblem badge. Beyond the grille, the bonnet rises in a full-bodied way and sweeps back, giving
the feeling of serious latent power trapped underneath.
As you view the new GT from the side, you get the impression of an animal of prey, a cheetah perhaps, sitting
back on its haunches, ready to pounce.
This adds to the impression of power.
Even when stationary, this car seems to be moving.
Everything about its looks says speed and movement.
Bentley call it "sculpted potency," and that's as good a description as any.
Looking from the back, this Bentley car appears smooth and compact.
The boot seems small and plain, relieved only by a flying "B" badge in the middle, and to be fair, this is not a
car designed for holding two weeks worth of holiday luggage, though it can if you want it to. The rear lights
dominate the rear design in a way, as do the twin exhaust pipes with their flattened oval design, looking exactly
right and adding to the latent power feeling this car projects.
The new Bentley GT on the inside ...
Luxurious refinement, is what describes the interior of the new Bentley GT cabin.
You are surrounded by leather seating and dark, glossy wood veneer paneling on selected surfaces.
Beneath your feet you sink almost ankle-deep into wool pile carpet.
This is the kind of environment that can make you feel positively wealthy, even if you are not.
The steering wheel feels relatively small for this car, but that only adds to its sporty character.
There are four large circular air vents on the dashboard, ringed by shiny chrome.
They sit embedded in the immaculate wood veneering and add a distinctive keynote appearance to the front
part of the cabin.
The area below the two central air vents is dominated by the large information screen, featuring useful and road
safe touch screen technology.
Here you can have a large screen GPS system guide you to your destination, or you can gain useful information about
something to do with the car.
This car has a two plus two seating arrangement.
The major part of the car's comfort can be found in the front compartment.
That's not to say the back seats are not comfortable. Compared to many "ordinary" cars, they are in fact luxurious.
It's just that the back seats of the Bentley GT appear almost an afterthought, albeit a very nice and comfortable
afterthought, of course.
The technical side of the new Bentley for sale ...
This car is powered by 5,998 cubic centimetre capacity W12 engine.
It develops 567 brake horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and 516 lb-ft at 1,700 rpm.
It has CO2 emissions of 384 grams per kilometre, which is EU5 rated.
It can go from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds, and roll on to top out at a cool 198 mph.
A ZF 6-speed automatic transmission gets this car rolling, via the convenient steering column mounted
paddleshift controls.
The transmission sends power to all the wheels, making it a continuous all-wheel drive car.
Doing the shopping in busy town conditions will only return 11.1 mpg.
Out on the country roads you will get a better 24.9 mpg, which give an overall combined average mileage
of 17.1 mpg.
However, the fuel tank is generous at 20 gallon capacity, if not overly cheap to pay for.
This is a big car with big needs.
Its elegance and refinement needs something big to back it up, and this car certainly has that.
The new Bentley GT - a quick summary ...
This is a car for the more discerning driver and owner.
It has beautiful echoes of a bygone age when elegance and classy quality was more commonplace.
It has a definite sporty feel to it.
The handling is positive, quick and very responsive, and yet it can also cruise seemingly effortlessly in an
almost regal manner.
The new Bentley is definitely a car to consider.
