Some History Of BMW

The BMW slogan sums it up – it is the ultimate driving machine. BMW is the acronym for Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) and it really is all about the motor. The first efforts of the company were focused on aircraft engines which unfortunately were not perfect and this may have something to do with the focus on the motor as the company developed. Expertise was needed to overcome the bad vibrations of the first motors.

Karl Friedrich Rapp opened his business, Rapp-Motorenwerke (motor works), in 1913. It was located in a building that had been a Munich bicycle factory. Rapp, an engineer who had worked for Daimler, opened his company as a subsidiary of the airplane maker, Flugwerk.

Perturbed by the less than perfect engines, Rapp approached Gustav Otto whose company, Gustav Flugmaschinefabrik, was also located in Munich. Otto’s father had invented the four-stroke internal combustion engine.

When in 1916, Rapp got a contract to deliver 25 large aircraft engines, he knew his production would not fill the order because his engines were not perfect. He turned to Otto for the four-cylinder water-cooled aircraft engines.

Rapp was clever and within months, Rapp-Motorenwerke acquired Gustav Flugmaschinefabrik to create a new company, Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke Bavarian Aircraft Works which quickly (March 7, 1916) became Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH or BMW.

The new company needed funding which came from recapitalization. Franz-Josef Popp of BMW and Camillo Castiglioni, head of the Wiener Bankverein, worked out a deal. By 1917, Popp and Castiglioni had taken over operations and demanded that Rapp leave the company. With Rapp out of the picture BMW produced the first aircraft engine.

The Type IIIa was water-cooled and a six-cylinder inline engine. The engineering brains behind the engine’s high-altitude carburetor was chief engineer Max Friz. His genius was behind the engine design quality for more than 50 years. He also persuaded the German government to buy the IIIa engine.

The 1918 success of the IIIa attracted a lot of attention to the new company and its engineering skill. Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH was restructured to be a public company and the name was modified to BMW AG which is still the name of the company. (AG stands for Aktiengesellschaft, a form of business controlled by shareholders.)

This all happened during World War I. When the war was over, the victorious allies forbade the German military to manufacture any more aircraft engines. The dynamic factory turned its skills to engines for boats, trucks and farm machinery while Popp and Friz secretly keep on building the forbidden aircraft engines, creating the Type IV.

However, by 1920 Castiglioni was suffering financially and sold his BMW holdings forcing the financially strapped business to expand to the manufacture of brake systems and other non-engine equipment. They also provided marine engines and motorcycle engines such as the M2 B 15 engine that was used in the Nürnberg Victoria motorcycle.

Finances were improving and in 1922, BMW built a new factory where Otto's aircraft factory had existed. One of the first efforts was the R32 motorcycle which impressed people at the 1923 Berlin Automobile Show. The boxer engine made its debut. The next iteration, the R37 motorcycle was even more powerful. The motorcycle won awards and meanwhile the company’s BMW VI engine had the company winning awards in the aircraft industry.

Buoyed by success, in 1928 BMW finally turned its skills to the production of cars. The company bought a car factory and the license from Austin to build the Dixi 3/15. By 1930, the Dixi was improved sufficiently to win motor races. This was the first classic.

The Classics

Each year, BMW came up with a better car and its 1936 328 roadster was nominated for car of the century. It was unbeatable in the 2-litre class and its design was stunning. For instance, the integrated headlamps set the standard for nearly two decades of style.

During the war BMW stopped producing cars and turned its energy toward the R57 Wehrmacht military motorcycle and rocket engines. At the end of the war, BMW was in tatters. Plants were destroyed by air raids and then the allies place a ban on production because of the company's work for the German war effort. The company was allowed to repair American army vehicles.

When it was finally permitted to build cars again, BMW did an odd thing – they developed the 501, a luxury sedan. It was 1951 and Germany was barely functional after their defeat. There was not a huge market for a luxury vehicle. However, until 1964, the 500 series, known as the Baroque Angels, was the mainstay of the BMW automobile line. The 507 emerged as the epitome of a fifties BMW classic.

The Turnaround

In 1960, the 700 brought the company back to its former glory. The 700 was available as a 2+2 coupé as well as a 2-door sedan. The next star to roll off the lines was the 1961 1500. Once BMW was back in business with the 700, there was no stopping the company's forward movement with its stunning example of excellence in cars.

The price might be demanding but the view is unparalleled. A pre-owned BMW is well worth the search. There is no such thing as a BMW dud. The interiors are lovely, the engine powerful. Sedan, convertible, coupe -- the choice is up to you. What suits your fancy? A sunroof or some other feature? You can have whatever you want.

Vehicles available for current buyers extend back to the beginning. It depends on your choice of model. There are the usual electric windows, cruise control, alloy wheels, air conditioning, leather interior, sports seats and the car itself regardless of the year of its production. A used BMW car comes with a vehicle history aside from the mileage and service history. It brings with it tales of the age in which it was designed.

When you are looking for cars for sale, the cars available can range from the first renditions to the latest releases. You have to understand your own personal reasons for wanting to be an owner. Is it the body type? Is it a desire to own a pre-owned collectible? What trade offs are you willing to make when it comes to that fine balance between price and history? Do you care if it is second hand or third hand or more? Does it matter why the last owner decided to become a seller? Did you search used cars throughout the United Kingdom?

Maybe you are on the hunt for the car that speaks to you and you just have not met it yet. When you think about this line of classic cars, do you have an automatic image of the one you want to own? Here is a hint that helps. Sit behind the wheel and test drive one and measure your sensations over your list of specifications.
