The 1966 Mercedes Pagoda SL 230 is an undeniable proof of professional engineering and love for beauty and balance.
It is a part of the 230 SL class, famous for the 2300 cc engine, whose manufacturing was initiated in 1963 and ended on 5 January 1967. It is based on the W 111 sedan platform, but its wheelbase was reduced by 11.8 inches.

It comes with a 4-speed manual transmission. Its short and wide chassis was improved with a single pivot independent rear suspension, powerful brakes and radial tires. To improve balance, control and stability, a dual-circuit brake system, front disc brakes and power-assisted rear drum brakes were added.

To increase the power of the engine, the producer operated a series of modifications, like the implementation of a fuel injection pump with six plungers instead of two, thus allowing for the nozzles to be placed in the cylinder head and for the fuel to be pushed through the intake manifold. The valves open directly into the combustion chambers. The car is powered by an inline-six cylinder engine.

Quite impressive improvements, if we keep in mind the 35 years that have passed since the 1966 Mercedes Benz SL 230 was produced. At first sight, you may be tempted to categorize it as a bit too old, unreliable or expensive, but only someone shallow and with limited knowledge of cars could overlook the possibility to turn this beauty into the centrepiece of a car collection.
