Enzo’s Dream
The aura of exotic, class, and wealth attached to the history of Ferrari is an echo of the genius behind the
automobile, Enzo Ferrari. Enzo began his car career with Alfa Romeo in the 1920s. This was his second choice – he
really wanted to work for Fiat but that company was under a hiring freeze following the Great War.
Enzo consoled himself with the joy of racing Alfas and was so dedicated to this lifelong passion that he developed
his own insignia, a prancing horse, for his race car. The prancing horse is still the emblem of the famous line of
cars he later produced.
In 1929, Enzo created his own racing team, Scuderia Ferrari racing Alfa Romeo cars.
Enzo did not begin producing his own line of superior race cars until 1947. The motivation for moving to building
his own sports cars stemmed from Alfa Romeo’s 1938 decision to set up its own sportscar racing team that absorbed
Scuderia Ferrari.
Enzo resented the removal of his name from the team title and in 1939, he left Alfa Romeo. Part of the exit deal
was his promise not to use his own name in the racing world for four years. Of course, 1939 was the beginning of
World War II in Europe and racing fell to the wayside for the most part until after the war.
Enzo’s headquarters were in Modena during his Alfa Romeo days. The company founded by Enzo Ferrari really began in
Maranello, where he moved his centre of operations during the war. It is interesting to note that Maranello is
still the company headquarters today.
After the war, Enzo began serious development of the car that has been iconic in the world of speed ever since –
the Ferrari 125. Also known as the 125S or the 125 Sport, this sleek machine made its grand entrance into the world
on May 11, 1947 at the Piacenza racing circuit.
Enzo’s first vehicle was actually the Auto Avio Costruzioni 815 which he built for Alfa Romeo. There were two of
these 815s and both were in the 1940 Brescia Grand Prix. Neither finished the race and one was scrapped.
However, this is about Ferrari as a car brand and only about Enzo as the brains behind the fabulous machine that
set the standard for sports car racing. The point of discussing his rise to the status of automobile idol is to
show that his obsession with racing and his experience with car design gave him the ability to turn a dream into
reality.
The Dream Machines
When you think of a Ferrari for sale, what do you see in your mind’s eye? Does it conjure visions
of incredible freedom? When you think about sliding behind the wheel of your own lustrous automobile, what do you
see? Let’s take a look at the progression from the 1947 125 to the current models. Maybe one of these beauties is
your heart’s delight.
These come in three different types – the GT, the Sports Prototype and the single seater.
In the 1940s, after the 125 came the 159 and the 166. The first GT was the 1948 166 Inter. The fifties brought 61
new models – 195, 275, 340, 375, 212, 342, 625, 500, 225, 250, 553, 625, 735, 750, 410, 555, D50, 376, 857, 860,
290, 810, 156, 315, 335, 326, 412, 196. There were variations on each of these numbered designations such as the F1
(Formula 1), America, Inter, Export, Indianapolis, Mexico, Europa, Coupé, Monza, Berlinetta, Superamerica,
Cabriolet, Dino, and Testa Rossa.
In the sixties, 58 more models appeared and in the 1970s, another 27 and in the eighties, another 40 new models
were developed. During the 1990s, there were 33 new models and in the first decade of the new century, another
29.
Of course, many of the models belong to a special series. One example is the 400 series which has attracted the eye
of numerous celebrities including Sir Elton John, Richard Burton, Rod Stewart, and Evil Kenievel.
A 400 starred in the movie, Rainman.
The Ferrari had an interesting connection to the popular Miami Vice Series (1984-1989). Sonny Crocket drove a 1972
Daytona Spyder 365 GTS/4. At least for the first two seasons and part of season three. However, it was a
replica built from a kit and Enzo sued for the use of his name. That’s why the Spyder was blown up in season
three’s premiere.
Enzo responded by donating two 1986 Testarossas but with his famed attention to detail, he had the Testarossa
produced in white because he did not like the black colour in the show because it was not strikingly visible. The
Testarossa appeared in 1984 and is often deemed as the most desirable of all Ferraris. The Testa Rossa (or TR 250)
first appeared in 1958 as a racing car. Side note – Testa Rossa is Italian for red head. The Testa Rossa has red
cylinder heads.
Fulfilling Your Dreams
This is a very simple introduction to a car that withstands the test of time. There are some astounding
collectibles in this line. These vehicles are works of art with some serious iconic elements to this line. Whether
you want a Ferrari to look at or to live it up in, you have a huge range of incredible cars to choose from.
There are sport cars, sport prototypes, road cars, past models, convertibles, special editions, and bio-fuel and
hybrid cars as well as electric hybrids (new in 2010). The name and logo are the primary appeal of this select
range of incredible vehicles. Age and condition are secondary in the consideration when it comes to buying one of
Enzo's creations because anyone who owns one certainly would make sure its service history is optimal.
When it comes to buying a Ferrari, you know you’re the type of person who will appreciate the joy
of ownership simply because you are astute enough to dream big. Some people just do not think of even dreaming in
that league. You do because you know the lifestyle and power that ownership of a true classic provides.
If you are looking for used Ferrari Testarossa cars available (of
course there are other choices than the famed Testarossa car for sale) a Ferrari Enzo for example, or for any used Ferrari sports cars for
sale for that matter, you know that the price could be daunting.
But it is worth it.
