Benz
Leasing a new Mercedes means getting a car that is synonymous with
quality, luxury and speed. The success of these cars is built on more than a century of superb craftsmanship, which
started with the first car to bear the name, a 35 horse power, 4-cylinder Daimler, built in 1900, and named
Mercedes after the pretty daughter of Emil Jellinek, a wealthy banker from Vienna who was financially involved with
the Daimler company.
Today, a new Mercedes most likely means obtaining one of the S Class
or E Class cars. These are sleek roadsters with more than just a hint of a James
Bond type lifestyle. The car prices are relatively high, but you get the kind of mean machine that makes young men
drool, and makes older, more sophisticated men, smile slyly with quiet satisfaction. These are cars that simply
ooze sportiness. They have an air of of the French or Italian Riviera about them. They make you think of sunshine,
casinos and pretty girls, and yet - these are not cars that are hopelessly out of reach. Anyone can have a new
Mercedes...
This is the entry level model of the Mercedes-Benz SLK sports cars. The standard car without extras comes in at
just under £30,000. It has a turbocharged 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder petrol driven engine that delivers 181 bhp and
delivers 184 ft-lb of torque at 1,800 to 4,600 rpm, taking it from 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds, consuming 41.5 mpg on a
combined urban and country figure. The top speed of the Mercedes SLK200 Sport AMG is rated at 143 mph. It has a
six-speed manual transmission gearbox. This car is quite 'green' for a sports car with CO2 emissions of just 158
grams per kilometre.
This car has many extras available. A set of AMG 18 inch alloy wheels with added sports suspension might be a good
start. You can have leather seating and metallic paint for that added touch of style. However, you buy a Mercedes
sports car for its performance, and the SLK200 Sport AMG doesn't disappoint in that respect. It isn't as zippy and
snappy as its bigger brothers, but it isn't meant to be either. This is a car that will satisfy anyone with a love
for quality and style.
This new Mercedes-Benz SLK sports car has a folding hardtop roof. It's a little bigger overall than its
predecessor. It has the same 2.43 metre wheelbase, but a track that 33 millimetres wider, an extra 31 millimetres
of length and an extra 5 millimetres of height. The extra size may not seem much, but it really does provide
welcomed elbow room for one thing. The car is still very recognisable as an Mercedes SLK, but it has a more
aggressive, coherent look that adds a level of determination and confidence.
The engine used by the new Mercedes SLK250 Sport AMG is a 1.8-litre turbo 4-cylinder petrol driven model. It
develops 228 ft-lb of torque at 2,000 rpm to 4,300 rpm. It can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.6 seconds, and go on
to level out at a top speed of 151 mph. The car has an automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, and still
manages to deliver a combined fuel consumption figure of 42.8 mpg. It is surprisingly environmentally friendly too
with CO2 emissions of 153 grams per kilometre.
The folding hardtop roof can drop away in just 20 seconds, but you have to be stationary, or moving at less than 2
mph, in order to do that. It also means that the boot space is seriously compromised when you go for the sporty
open air look, but then, generous boot space is not the reason people buy this car. There are three different roof
available, including one that 'magically' changes the clear glass of the roof window to a dark purple at the touch
of a button.

The Mercedes S350L CDI is powered by an up rated version of the same 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbodiesel engine that
powered the S320 CDI. Fuel consumption is up by 3 mpg from 34 mpg to 37 mpg, combined urban and country driving,
and it's more environmentally friendly too at 199 grams of CO2 per kilometre, an improvement on the previous 220
grams per kilometre of 21 grams per kilometre.
The environmental greener engine comes about as a result of greater efficiency made to the 7-speed automatic
gearbox, the addition of low-resistance tyres, and several aerodynamic adjustments that have significantly improved
the smooth running of the car. Mercedes call their S-Class cars, "the original reference point in the luxury
class." It's easy to see what they mean too. Mercedes have added several electronic technology features to make
driving a lot easier, or at least, a lot more fun.
The Lane Assist feature is useful and a bit of a novelty if you are not used to it. It quite simply makes the
steering wheel vibrate gently whenever you drive over a white line without first making a signal. It presupposes,
rightly hopefully, that you are gripping the wheel, and that you will feel the vibrations and be reminded of your
signalling obligations. Another technology feature is the automatic dipping of the full-beam headlights when they
sense oncoming traffic. There are other features that make this Mercedes a car in a class of its own, and one that
many people will really want to get their hands on.
Which New Mercedes Benz?
The question is really one that is best answered by assessing individual needs. The Mercedes
SLK200 Sport AMG offers an entry level feel for the famous Mercedes sports cars. It is a sleek and beautiful
model that while not cheap, is decidedly less so than the other models. This car has an impressive fuel consumption
and a decent top speed, with good 'green' characteristics. The Mercedes SLK250 Sport AMG builds on the SLK200. It's
a larger car with more automation, but the same 1.8-litre turbo 4-cylinder petrol driven. The Mercedes S350L CDI is
definitely in a luxury class of its own. It has features that are almost futuristic in quality, and it can deliver
every promise too. Which new Mercedes should you choose? That's for you to answer.
