The Porsche Legend
The legend began in Stuttgart in 1931 even thought it took a couple of decades before the car as we came to know it
emerged. The design came from Professor Ferdinand Porsche whose business was motor vehicle development and
consulting. The first vehicle production of the professor’s consulting business was a people’s car for his major
client – the German government. And that vehicle was Volkswagen Beetle which remains a prime example of car design
success.
The doctor had a long and intriguing history in car design beginning with the System Lohner-Porsche of 1900 which
was an electric carriage rather than a car. He worked for Austro-Daimler as its chief designer. He later worked for
the newly formed Daimler-Benz. Then the Great Depression struck and there was no more work for the aging professor
which is how he ended up as a consultant and therefore to the work for the German government.
The way things were in the car world in the pre-World War II days, affordable vehicles for many Europeans were rare
because the typical vehicle was a high-end luxury car. The notion of a people’s car had been bandied about amongst
the big names in the auto industry for years. People like Porsche were used to focusing on quality and detail that
appealed to the wealthy so this was a challenge to their ingenuity.
The Volkswagen Beetle brought together the design quality and the economy of design. The first car bearing the
Porsche name, the 64, was produced in 1939 using many of the Beetle’s components. This model also went under the
title of the VW Aerocoupe, Type 64 and Type 60K10. There were three 64s produced and only one survived the war. It
was last raced in 1982 at the Monterey Historic Races.
This was a chaotic time for the world as well as the car industry and even for the old professor. Luckily his son
Ferry was part of his consulting company and able to carry on the family tradition of engineering miracles. In
1948, the Porsche 356 brought the name to the attention of the sports and racing cars world.
The 356 was a rear-engine, 2-door sports car and was in production until the middle of the sixties, even after the
911 appeared in 1963. If you are a true aficionado, you might like to know that there are still nearly 40,000 of
the 356 in existence.
The Classic Porsche 911 was conceived in 1959 with the goal
of improving on the 356 in terms of being bigger, more comfortable and more powerful. It had the trademark
rear-mounted engine and 2 small rear seats. By 1966, an even more improved version, the 911 S was produced with
five-leaf design alloy wheels. In 1967, the Targa with its stainless steel roll bars hit the market. The basic
design was a classic that did not change from 1963 until 1998 and it came in three styles – 2-door coupe, 2-door
cabriolet and a 2 door Targa, all with a rear engine.
Shifting Gears

The fundamental construction has not changed for the most part but there have always been features that might be
considered experimental and sometimes they catch on even when they might seem to be counter to the principles of
the Porsche concept.
One example of a vehicle not designed for speed is the Cayenne that first appeared in 2003. The so-called bulbous SUV
surprised purists. It seemed completely out of character for a company that was famed for its unique style. It’s an
odd combination because as a SUV, it has some drawbacks such as no capacity for a third seat and limited cargo
area. And yet, it has been deemed a success.
There is something about the construction that deserves a little attention and that is the Tiptronic transmission. It is the Porsche version of the manumatic
transmission which works like an automatic transmission but allows the driver to manually shifts gears if so
desired. Tiptronics is a registered Porsche trademark.
At first the idea of a Porsche with an automatic transmission seemed somehow not true to the racing car idea.
However, since the majority of the drivers of this fine brand are not race car drivers and since automatic
transmissions are easier to handle for urban drivers, the Tiptronic just makes sense.
The Porsche Boxster (named for its combination of the boxer engine and its roadster design) was developed in 1996
(the 986). It was the first road car since the 550 Spyder which began life as a roadster. The recent Porsche
cayenne diesel and the Porsche cayenne for sale are a variation from the traditional concept of what this sporty
brand represents. A used Boxster may be the car of your dreams.
Whatever you are looking for in a new or used example, the company has expanded from the streamlined convertible
that is the image that for a long time represented this series of excellence in engineering.
Looking to Buy?
One of the inevitable thoughts that come to mind when you fancy yourself in a convertible Porsche is
the price. The concept of depreciation is not all that applicable to your typical 911. It’s not a matter of
condition, or the use of petrol, or the speed of these durable beasts that affect the price. It’s the aura that
they exude.
There are pre-owned models for sale even though it is a rare Porsche owner who is motivated to sell his or her
incredible machine. Look at the Carrera from the 1980s – the prices for these used 911s have increased over time.
The good news is that when you buy a pre-owned Porsche, you won’t lose much in depreciation and could even find
that the price increases.
While these are cars built for speed, there is much more to them than speed. The sheer comfort of driving a 911 is
unparalleled so chances are good that you will be buying for pleasure rather than as an investment. The level of
performance and control that you feel on the road, black leather seats (there are other colours too but black is so
classic), great mileage, detailed service, ideal technical specs, engine capacity -- these are items that make
looking for cars for sale in the high-end market such a delight.
